Art Pepper + Eleven

Art Pepper + Eleven Review

By most standards a "little" big-band album, this set carried the bebop canon, such as it was, into the realm of California cool jazz, using Art Pepper's chops on milky tenor and sharp alto saxophones alongside plush arrangements from Marty Paich. There were key links on this session to the Miles Davis nonet's Birth of the Cool a decade earlier, which opened with the same Denzil Best tune. But Pepper offered himself up as a more acidic improviser, jagging solo structures despite the comparative clarity in his tone. Some of the most compelling moments come during Horace Silver's "Opus de Funk," which Pepper spins as an intricate, if not entirely funky, platform for full-band riffing and pinching alto contrasts with the trumpet-driven brass section. There is a continual bowling-over process here, with Pepper overwhelmed by the full colors surrounding him, and then the ensemble likewise startled by Pepper's tart intensity. --Andrew Bartlett

Give'n It

Give'n It Review

Kona, Hawaii: think lush natural landscapes, divine inspiration and kids with nothing to do except find the next rage and invent slicker ways to pick up girls. Add metal and rock/dancehall influences to Hawaiian spirit, humor and ridiculously good looks - and you got Pepper. "Give'n It" was originally recorded in late 1997 in the only studio that existed in Kona at the time. Pepper caught the attention of fans from all corners, particularly Volcom Entertainment. After packing up all their belongings and heading to California, Pepper scored dates with established artists like Born Jamericans, Shaggy, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Pato Banton & Secret Hate, were featured on XBox and Transworld Surf & Snow games, and played an entire run on the Warped Tour 2001, paying their dues by building the stage and pumping their signature Kona-dub-rock into the hearts of fans from state to state. It is edgy, lush, rocking, melodic, innovative, heart-grabbing and a good ride. It is Pepper.

Kona Gold

Kona Gold Review

Recorded in Boulder, CO in August 2008, "Kona Gold" is a live performance of Pepper's career pioneering 2002 full-length debut, "Kona Town". Driven by the spirit of aloha and the inspiration of the Hawaiian Islands, that album remains the cornerstone of Pepper's catalog. "Kona Gold" features all the cardinal tracks, including 2005's alternative radio hit, "Give It Up" (#34 Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks), and fan faves like "Stone Love", "Tradewinds", and "Stormtrooper".

White Pepper [180gm Vinyl]

White Pepper [180gm Vinyl] Review

White Pepper [180gm Vinyl] Feature

  • Rock
When Ween released their debut, God Ween Satan, in 1990, the question on most listeners' minds was "Are they serious?" Ten years later, White Pepper has folks asking "Are they joking?" No, as evidenced by the straightforward pop that makes up their eighth studio effort. This isn't a sellout, but a continuation of the sound explored on their previous release, The Mollusk. Songs like "Even If You Don't" and "Back to Basom" are respective nods to their McCartney and Lennon joneses, and even more stunningly, the brothers Ween bust out their most irony-free love song yet, "Stay Forever." The boys haven't completely abandoned the silly--the Caribbean-flavored "Bananas and Blow" and the Steely Dan-influenced "Pandy Fackler" are good for giggles--but the "more pop, less poop" rule remains in effect, leaving room for majestic tastiness like "Flutes of Chi" and "The Grobe." All in all, a fantastic salute to rock & roll. --Jason Josephes Japanese version of indie rock act's eighth album with one bonus track, 'Who Dat?'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

One Hot Minute

One Hot Minute Review

One Hot Minute Feature

  • RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS ONE HOT MINUTE
At the time of its release, One Hot Minute was viewed as the beginning of a new direction for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Guitarist John Frusciante had departed and former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro joined the ranks after some false starts with short-lived replacements. Band chemistry here isn't quite up to past standards. Navarro stretches out throughout the album, imbuing tunes with a heavy dose of hard rock and psychedelia and providing a stark contrast from Frusciante's dexterous noodling. Tracks such as "Warped" and "Aeroplane" display a band prone to exploring a less frenetic hard rock, while "Shallow Be Thy Game" sounds like the old band. Frusciante eventually returned to the fold, so this 1995 collection now stands as a curious intermission for the Peppers. --Rob O'Connor RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS ONE HOT MINUTE

Train To Your Lover

Train To Your Lover Review

The Pepper Pots are back with their 4th full length effort! Their second now on Megalith Records. ""Train To Your Lover"" has brought them front and center in the world of soul music. With each release they have slowly moved away from the soul / ska blend that they established early on. The band has been honing their soul skills and have embraced them full force on this album. Boasting a large musical arsenal and their signature female trio singers, The Pepper Pots have mastered the ability to MAKE soul music. They are NOT copying it, they are CREATING it!
